Rachel: Hey there, Diane! :)
So, I only have one question about the book and that is...
  • What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing Robin in the Hood
You know, as you write and see your characters interact in different situations, you get to know them more deeply. For me, the biggest surprise of Robin in the Hood is how sensitive bad-boy Creek really turned out to be—and that he prayed for help to take care of the people he loves at Turtle Shores. At one time in my life I was a teacher for adolescent youth in a correctional facility, and many of those kids had been committing crimes to help provide for their families. It broke my heart! So I wanted to write a novel that did justice to their experiences and didn't portray all juvenile delinquents as unilaterally bad.

Rachel: So now, why don't we get to know more about you, shall we? :)

  • What do you think about the most? The past, the present or the future? Why?

None of the above! I'm a chronic daydreamer ever since I was a child (I used to get in trouble for that in school), so what I think about most is the interactions between my imaginary friends (the term I give my fictional characters : ). When I'm jogging out in the woods near my home, I'm always thinking about the imaginary worlds my characters live in—which is kind of a suspended-in-time, eternal present—and what they're doing there. I swear, I come up with the best scenes for my books while I'm jogging!

  • What's your worst/best memory of high school and why?

Oh, I cut class a LOT in high school and was always going on great adventures with my friends. We'd go ride horses or take a bus to a great city (just like the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off). Things were much more relaxed back then—I don't think you could get away with it as easily now. We were also really good at faking excuses for the principal's office. Our tactics would never fly today.

  • What do you think is your best asset?
My best asset is by FAR my imagination and creativity. I firmly believe that's what makes life magical—a creative point of view. When you allow your mind to roam freely and treat everything as potent & magical, you can't help but view life as enchanting.

  • What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? And the answer to that is?
I think it would be fun to hear from authors what is the most outrageous thing they've ever done. For me, that probably involves the time I rode a mustang horse from Mexico to Canada and back. I was just out of college and it took me a year. Believe it or not, it was for a job, so I was paid to do it. Yep, I'm a true cowgirl.

...And now for the Spring Fling Giveaway!!

Author Interview

Hello Danielle!Welcome to Say It With Books, thank you so much for stopping by! :)

  • ·         As a child, did you want to be a writer when you grew up? If not what did you want to do?

I remember writing an essay in third grade about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I knew I wanted to entertain people and make them happy. (Not sure if my books make people happy though, mostly I hear about tears LOL.) It wasn’t until sixth grade that I knew without a doubt, I wanted writing to be part of my future.

    ·         What is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is probably the one place I never write, by the water. Any ocean or beach setting inspires me and brings out words that string together to create beautiful images and touch on deep emotions.

    ·         What was one of the most surprising things you learned while creating Breaking Waves?

The most surprising thing I learned was that my husband knows what to do in a sand storm, lol. I know, completely unrelated, but it did come out during research for an activity I thought of having Jenna and Tyler do. On a serious note, I think I was surprised at the depth of Tyler’s feelings and emotions. While he puts on a tough exterior, deep down he really does care not only about what people think about him, but how they feel about him as well. While he feels betrayed by just about everyone, he realized who he wants to be and struggles to become a better person.

    ·         If you could have breakfast with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and what would you eat?

I’d have breakfast with Steve Jobs.  Ever since I learned he was so instrumental in the new animation used to create Toy Story, he’s been one of my idols.  As I learned more about him, I came to find we share philosophies on passion and career.  He has also changed my life and the life of every living person. Steve Jobs changed the way we see things, we hear things, and our use of technology. I don’t believe there is one person alive whose life has not in some way been altered by Steve Jobs. And he had every excuse to fail, but bought into none of it, and would settle for nothing but success.
Since it’s breakfast and I’d be eating with a man who believes in being true to yourself, I would order a plain bagel, very lightly toasted with cream cheese and bacon on it.  I know it sounds a little strange, but it really is delicious, and I haven’t had that in a really long time!

    ·        What is your favorite childhood book and/or author?

I’m not sure there was one specific book, but like many kids I LOVED Dr. Seuss. I remember looking forward to and enjoying the funny sounding words and the ridiculousness of the cat in the hat books, Put Me in the Zoo, and One Fish, Two Fish.

    ·         The top five books that you really enjoyed reading in the year 2012?

There are so many books I’ve enjoyed reading, and I hate to admit, that due to a drastic change in my vision (reading was actually painful) in the middle of the year, this list is a bit skewed, so here they are in no particular order.
    1.   Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
    2.   Forget You by Jennifer Echols
    3.   10 Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn’t Have) by Sarah Mlynowski
    4.   Thoughtless- although it was really Kellan Kyle that I loved.  By S.C. Stephens
    5.   Effortless By S.C. Stephens

    ·        Can you describe your main characters Reece & Jenna in less than 150 characters?

    Okay, here goes!

Jenna is a beautiful, strong teenage girl who happens to be a clairsentient. Based on her history with boys, she mistrusts them all. Until she meets Reece. Although she fights it, Jenna falls head over heels in love with him. Jenna knows, without Reece in her life, the colors are drab, rainbows don’t exist and tears will fall forever.

Reece is the gorgeous guy who’s after Jenna’s heart. He’s quick witted and charming, while being an all-out tease.  Reece is very romantic and always knows just what to say to make Jenna feel special. He’s athletic and loves to read. He’s smart and a little old fashioned. He can make Jenna melt with his touch and flirtatious smile.  He’s faithful and dependable, and very well meaning. He’s loyal to a fault.  But when he gets something stuck in his head, there’s no talking him out of it.

More About Danielle...

Danielle Sibarium grew up as an only child of divorced parents in Brooklyn, New York. Her imagination was developed at an early age. Surrounded by stuffed animals and imaginary friends, she transported herself into a fantasy world full of magic and wonder. Books were the gateway between her play world and reality. On any given summer afternoon she became Snow White sweeping and cooking for the dwarfs, or Cinderella waiting for the prince.

Danielle always loved dialogue and in elementary school began writing plays and short stories. This is when she began to understand she could not only bring her fantastical world to life for herself, but she could enchant others as well. And so she wrote. She wrote and wrote and wrote.

Sadly the first piece she ever sent out for publication of any sort was a letter to the editor of The Home News Tribune. It was a piece thanking the first responders for their bravery and selflessness on Sept 11th. It was chosen as letter of the week.

In 2007 Danielle collaborated with Charlotte Doreen Small to write songs for her CD More. Danielle wrote the lyrics for Take My Hand, and Goodbye, while Charlotte contributed the melody.
In October 2011 Danielle’s debut novel
For Always was released. She has since released Heart Waves and the second book in the Heart Waves series, Breaking Waves

Danielle graduated from Farleigh Dickinson University with honors, and currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and three children.
