The Unputdownable Reads of 2014

Occasionally we come across books that are so engrossing that the very idea of putting them down is blasphemous. Sometimes it is the writing that compels you to turn the pages, sometimes it is the plot that has you riveted. And sometimes it's the characters that capture your mind and ensnare your heart.

Whatever the reason is, there is no doubt that these books make it physically impossible for you to stop reading them. So today I'll be sharing seven such unputdownable books:

“I bet you could sometimes find all the mysteries of the universe in someone's hand.”
This YA GLBT about two Mexican teens is guaranteed to blow you away. Sáenz  combines gorgeous prose with a realistic portrayal of adolescents coming to terms with their identity and delivers a simple yet powerful story.
If I had to purchase one book with my last $20 it would be Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Yes, it is that good.

“It's funny how you can forget everything except people loving you. Maybe that's why humans find it so hard getting over love affairs. It's not the pain they're getting over, it's the love.”
Melina Marchetta is a sorceress. That's the only rational explanation I was left with after I finished On the Jellicoe Road. Because what kind of author leaves your speechless after you close the book other than one who practices the art of magic?
“Bravery comes one day at a time.”
Love. Faith. Hope. Friendship. Forgiveness. Courage.
Faking Normal delivers this message in a powerful package of mystery, riveting prose and romance.
Not convinced yet? Read my full review HERE.
“I can’t be the only one faking it. I’m not the only lonely small-town girl drowning in this big city. I’m not the only refugee feeling invisible and alone. I’m not the only one who wants to scream, ‘NOTICE ME! I MATTER!’ Maybe everyone is faking it. Maybe they’re just better at it than I am.”
Texas. Family Drama. Football. Love. Sisterhood. Dreams. Food.
Trust me, you will not regret picking this up.

"Would you like a rest?"She considers the question, then nods, reaching up to tuck her hair back where it belongs. "Where will I sit?"Sit? Why, on this comfortable chaise lounge I've carried for you in my pocket, Your Highness. So glad you asked.
Titanic in Space - Enough said. Read my full review HERE for my detailed thoughts on this  epic survival story slash timeless romance.
“I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn't already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.”
Narrated by Death, this intense novel sneaks into your heart and tears it apart. Once you turn the final page you'll be left wondering how the rest of the world can go on after you just had your heart broken by a paperback.
And yes, the ending made me cry. SO MANY FEELS, GUYS.
“Nothing’s worse than a story without an end.”
Clairvoyance. A dystopian society. Slow burning romance. A beautifully complex protagonist. A mind-blowing plot.
It has a cliff hanger-ish ending(THANK YOU, SAMANTHA) so I'm absolutely dying to read the sequel. IS IT JANUARY 2015 yet??

  1. I've only read Faking Normal (which I absoluuuuuuutely loved) out of all these! I do have copies of The Book Thief and On The Jellicoe Road- I'm almost scared to get into them though because everyone I know loves them haha!

Some of my unputdownable reads of 2014 would be: Open Road Summer, Since You've Been Gone, Love Letters To The Dead, Faking Normal, and Just One Night! I know the last one's a novella- but it's the best damn novella I've ever read! :D

    1. Oh Hazel, you MUST read them both! I can understand though, I was initially so afraid of not liking The Book Thief that I kept putting it off. I finally had the courage to pick it up when a friend invited me for a read-along. My only regret is that I didn't pick it up sooner!

Open Road Summer and Since You've Been Gone are on my wish list-So much love from the blogosphere for these two! I adored Gayle Formans's If I Stay so I'll be picking up Just One Day & Just One Night for sure.

Thanks for the recs, Hazel! <3

  5. I looooooooooove On The Jellicoe Road so much. Every book Melina Marchetta writes just makes me want to detach my heart for a while and put it back again once I'm done. I have to protect what little heart I have left because of her. I also adored The Book Thief and once again my heart...Sigh. I haven't read any of other books you mentioned but seeing them beside On The Jellicoe Road and The Book Thief definitely made me want to read them all. And I will, sooner than later.

    1. I need more of Melina Marchetta's winning formula-I've been thinking 'Finnikin of the Rock' maybe? I heard it's a MUST READ.

  6. I love that we have such similar tastes. The only books here that I didn't love are the ones I haven't read yet! I adore all your other choices - The Book Thief, Ari & Dante, Jellicoe Road. I want to re-read them all now. :)
