Prologue
Eight hours since leaving Rocky Hills
Chaos.
No one knew how they’d found us. But they were here, three to one, Telalian to Dracian. I was swiftly escorted from the danger by eighteen Dracians, two covering each direction and ten more as backup: Axel, Dean, Dimitri, Trinity, Tyler, Carson, Skye, and eleven others I had never met.
The battle screams from behind got fainter. We approached a twenty foot tall bronze colored iron doors. “Prepare for departure,” Axel ordered as Skye pushed open the metal door to a room.
The first thing I noticed was the overpowering smell of sulfur and rotten eggs.
No wonder they thought this was a safe place to transport me. I wouldn’t get a hundred yards near this place, with that lingering smell to welcome me.
Second, I noted a woman move forward with a purpose. “Yes sir,” she said.
Her all black leather attire made a scraping sound as her body moved to the command. Her hair pulled back into a single, tight braid, making her eyes and forehead stretch into a perpetually stoic expression.
My eyes darted from Axel to her as she drew out what looked like a cane decorated with brilliant blue stones at the shaft. She inserted it into the ground with a swift twist of her wrist. A whining sound drew my attention to the podium at the back of the hall. I stared as a beautiful blue globe rose, spanning the length of the entire wall.
She withdrew a dagger from the sheath around her thigh, slicing her palm. I winced witnessing the act. Her expression stayed blank, unreadable mask of determination. The blood, from her palm, rained over the blue glowing cane. She chanted a sweet melody in a language I wasn’t familiar with… except for the ending when she switched to English. “Heed my plea and accept this token, for we wish to come home, Mother Dracia.”
Then two brilliant white doors appeared in middle of the blue orb. Then doors behind us vibrated when a loud bang echoed the hall, like someone was trying to break them free.
Telalians.
“Let’s go.” Dean, my protector, tugged at my arm.
“What? No!” I snatched away from his grip. The unmistakable battle cries, metal against metal sound, and whooshing hums of Dracian magic from our warriors’s losing battle, were too loud to ignore. “We can’t leave our people behind.” I turned to head over the metal door that we had just passed through.
“Don’t be stupid.” Dean lowered his voice to a whisper. “Your life is worth more than anyone else’s.”
The contents in my stomach churned at his statement. They were all sacrificing themselves for me. For someone they didn’t know. I shook my head. “No I can’t—”
With an earsplitting boom the iron doors burst open, throwing us to the corners of the room. My back hit the wall and my vision blurred for a few seconds. I groaned, my hand rubbing over my tender tailbone.
My eyes took in the flicks of red hot fire blazing before us. Around the room, Dracians slowly recouped, finding their way back up to their feet. Few bruised and some others with visible gash wounds and bleeding. A body laid motionless. My heart thudded against my chest for the few seconds I couldn’t place Axel among the standing warriors.
Relief flooded me when our eyes connected. His eyes relaxed visibly. He seemed to have taken quite the beating. His face was decorated with several gash wounds, his clothes torn and burned by the blast. He waved his hand back and forth as if to tell me to go, to walk toward the light behind me. Was he kidding? There was no way I was going to leave him behind. He stepped toward me and I noticed the limp in his step.
Then through the bluish-red flames, a cluster of hooded bodies, dressed in blood-red trench coats, marched in. Their synchronized march resonated against the walls of the room. With keen precision they parted way in the middle. A brown haired man I had only seen once before stepped though the pathway, his head high, shoulders stiff, and a smile that would have the devil peeing in his pants.
Armin.
