So I'm back.
After one whole month of no blogging, no reviewing, no blog-related tweeting/e-mailing and most importantly a month of doing exactly what I pleased I'm back.
So settle in because in this half blogging lesson/half life lesson post I'm going to tell you about my experience on going offline and why I decided to take the plunge.
With exams coming up and a reading/blogging slump looming I was forced to take a break. And with a little help from Miranti's post at Pen & Peplum on Planning for a time offline I was able to make this sabbatical a great one.
Taking a step back made me look at things in a different perspective. I started realizing that blogging had become a chore for me because I was continuing do things that I didn't really enjoy doing.
Everyone were doing so many amazing things on their blogs and I was feeling just stuck in this rut.
Then it hit me-I needed a time out ASAP.
So now that I'm back all I can say you HAVE to give it a go. Going offline may have been the best thing I ever did this year.
And here's what I've learnt-
- Let It Go:
Last year this time around, Rachel and I hosted the Indie Self-Published Author Event. And thanks to all the authors, bloggers and readers who participated it was EPIC. So I felt like should be done this year too but I just couldn't seem to go through with it and kept beating myself up about it. But you know what? I decided to just let it go. And it feels so good to not have the event hanging over my head. Let go off the things that make you miserable and allocate more of your time for things that bring your joy instead. Simplify. De-Clutter. And cleanse.
- You are still here:
You know what? You are awesome. Yep, I'm talking to you.
When I decided to take a break my first thoughts were: What if my readers stopped reading my blog? What if readers are annoyed my lack of posts and unfollow? What about the connections I've made?
I was worried that going offline would mean that I'd lose my readers. So if you are reading this-THANK YOU. Seriously. I'm sending you a bazillion virtual hugs, cookies and kittens(that is if you are a cat person or puppies, if you are dog person. But if you are neither, I'm sorry but I'm all out of baby pandas).- I'm awesome and so are you:
Give your work due credit. Stop undermining yourself and stop trying to implement something just because it's working for someone else. Get away from the internet and seek inspiration from your own life. Write. Just write even if you do not end up hitting that publish button. Squeeze some time for yourself away from all the noise and allow yourself to find your voice. There will always be a risk of losing your readers so don't let something that you can't control hold you back.
When I took a step back what I realized was I had gotten too far away from what I loved about blogging in the first place. I was trying so hard to play the game of please-the-reader and my content was taking a nose-dive.
So taking a step back has allowed me to reset my priorities and decide what direction I want this blog to take. There will be changes, some small and some big(I'm working on taking some huge leaps). I'm hoping to create more meaningful and strong relationships with my readers. And above all, I'm striving to do the things that me happy.
Over to you:
If you have been thinking of taking a break whether it's a day/week or a month all I can say is go for it! And for those who are just back from a break, I'd love to hear about your experience. So leave your thoughts in comments section/tweet at me/e-mail me because I'd love to continue our talk.
Have a beautiful week! :)
xoxo
It's all good. Still reading (in Bloglovin'). Glad you worked it out!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Katterley! <3
DeleteGreat post! I really enjoyed it, I am taking a break (kind of) too, because I am moving my blog to a new account, so I haven't been posting anything new on my new blog, I am making some mayor changes as well!

I'm looking forward to the changes and hope you enjoy this sorta break. :D
DeleteHugs!
I haven't worried about my blog in a week and a bit, which is nothing compared to your month but is a lot for someone who used to worry about it all the time. I've been dealing with my exams for the past few weeks and with the time left over that I have, I realize that I really don't want to spend it on my blog. I need a break and now I know that it's okay for me to take one and that nothing will go wrong if I do! Lovely post and I agree with everything that was said here!
ReplyDeleteGo girl! You should definitely treat yourself to some "me time" especially since you just finished your exams(Hope it went well?). And trust me, when you are back you'll feel better than ever before. :)

Awww, don't worry Nuz. I get that what you feel, I think its normal to compare yourself to others, but we just have to remember that we're great in a different way. Even I decided that I just blog whenever I want to. I don't get frustrated when I don't blog much anymore, (but I still read other blogs :D). We blog because its something that we love, we shouldn't think that its a chore, I can't wait to see more of Say it With Books Nuz :D
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad you were able to take this break! It's definitely an amazing thing to do since we're all so attached to the internet. I don't know if I'd be able to go offline for that long but one day, I want to! Maybe when I have really really important exams. :D Welcome back! <3
ReplyDeleteI think taking a break is a great idea when you need it, and then you come back feeling recharged and stress-free. Sometimes letting go of things is hard though, so great job that you were able to.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great post on taking a break, and what it can do for you and your mind. :) It is important to take breaks, after all! I'm glad that going offline gave you a chance to refresh and recentre yourself. <3 Great post, Nuz!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great post and I am glad I found while stalking bloglovin today. Life and other things made it so I had to take a break from my beloved blog for awhile.
ReplyDeleteI really had to reevaluate what I wanted out of blogging and what I was in it for.
Once I did that I decided to start slowly. Go back to the basics. So to speak. Not start my blog over from scratch but start blogging over from scratch.
I decided that I was going to reach out to other types of bloggers that I am interested in and really make a genuine effort to get to know people & leave them comments. I will post as I can & not stress myself out over posts, and not dedicate myself to a scheduled post or review at this time.
Right now I want to remember why I began this journey. So I figure if I make it simple I can slowly work my way back up to where I want to be, and not try to force myself to fit into a place I did not want to be, and wasn't me.
I hope this makes sense.
I know that everybody takes a sabbatical for different reasons. Some are more in depth than others. But when you need a break you need a break, and hopefully when you come back you are refreshed and have a new mindset.
I am glad I found this post. Thank you. Really help me put my thoughts into perspective.
