Guest Review: The Fault in Our Stars - John Green

AuthorJohn Green
Publisher: Dutton Books
Release Date: 10 January 2012
Synopsis:

Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

Jules's Thoughts
I finally read, one of the most hyped up books ever since I started reading. I was warned of potential heart ache and possible(more like sure) falling of tears. And yet, reading it. I’ve never felt agony and mourning, and greatness as much as I did on this one.

I’ve been reading for more than two years now, and ever since I started, I’ve always heard of the book: Fault in our Stars. I was wondering then why it was so famous and well-known? Year 2012 has passed, and I’ve already heard of what this book has done to so many readers out there. This year, was the year I said to myself that I had to know the allure of this book.

Originally I just borrowed this from one of my fellow bookworms. I just wanted to quench my curiosity because I am really intrigued with this book. And the time I started it, it was really really hard to put it down after. The plot and pacing of the book was divine. Everything was well written and meaningful, without being too forced or awkward. TFioS was the perfect mix of the lightest chick-lit books I’ve ever read. And the most emotional books that made me sob and cry and scream and shriek, etc.

Then I got to that part. And reading that sentence broke me down to screams and sobs. I had never expected that to happen. I thought differently and yet I was wrong, and it had reduced me to more sobbing and tears. (My classmates saw me breakdown. And let me point out that I never cry over books at school. That’s just how intense this book was). It took me two or three days to fully read another book. And yet, whenever I remember TFioS, I would remember that moment. And become sad all over again.

I guess that’s the main reason why I loved reading TFioS. It made me feel something I rarely feel when reading books. And Green not only made a great book. He made a book that will surely affect everyone who reads it. I admit that some deep parts of the book, I still don’t understand. But it had a charm to it, and I loved that the writing was different from most books I’ve read already. Despite me not understanding some of it.

I’m still trying to be vague, just to benefit those of you who haven’t read The Fault in our Stars yet. But its hard to resist a book this good. In fact, its not just good. Its brilliant. Its deep and interesting and emotional. It makes you see point of views from such unique characters. Personally, I’ve never experienced a moment where it felt like I experienced agony from losing someone. But with this book, I had a taste of it, and I mean that in a good way.  John Green is that good. If I could I’d rate this 10 Stars.

P.S. : I have not yet bought it, but I will sure will buy it. I want that book on my own shelf.

  2. I still need to read this book myself! The hype surrounding it puts me off a bit, but I think it's about time that I found out what it's like for myself. Nearly everyone I've heard from has loved it! I'm glad it managed to have an emotional impact on you, Nuzaifa. Lovely review! :)
