My Thoughts
There were a lot of bumps in the road, but in the end, it was a good book. Not great, not bad, just good.
Very weird as it is, but this will be my first review of the year! (YAY FOR THAT!). It took me a long while to finish this book. I almost put in hold for a reason you will know later ;)
When I first started reading it… there was a lot of action already, to the point that it got me confused. After a few scenes, I got to see the “main character” which is ugh… yeah Riven… Riven here is supposed to find this guy that her king and bestfriend is making her find. And she finally found him, but she never thought she would find feelings as well.
*sigh*
To be honest… I just feel a bit bored talking about this book. Its not bad actually, there was a relativity to it, it was something cool to think about, the fighting scenes were pretty well written, but it lacks consistency that I think is significant in a book.
The first part of the book (1-30%) was the most interesting in the story. Though there aren’t many things to know yet, it was fun to get to meet the characters of the book. But by the middle(31-50%) it was just a blur for me. In fact it took me three or four days to finally get to even the half of it. It was agonizing. It felt like the pacing was like a walking tortoise compared to the first part, and it felt forced ‘ya know? As if it was just written there as a part of a book, not part of the story.
Thankfully, after first half of the story. Things got better. Not really awesome per se, but it made the book much more easier to read. The pacing went back to normal like in the first part and the secrets finally came out (which no, offense is actually obvious) and as sad as the ending is, I sorta liked it. Plot… okay… pacing… meh… characters… lovable? Not really.
I’ve never encountered a moment wherein I forgot the name of a character I just recently read. To be brutally blunt. The characters for me were a bit forgettable. I don’t hate anything about them really, but they didn’t really mark an emotion in me that made me want to remember them.
Though its not all bad. I loved the world building here. Everything was articulately written. It made me see Neospes as if I was watching a HD movie. The fighting also reminded me of some action movies I’ve watched and I’m amazed that unlike other books with action. All the action here seemed invigorating, unlike others that felt like a blur and I was intrigued with the ending, and I can say truthfully, that I will be expecting the next book. And I hope it would be better than the first. Just a little ;)

DeleteI've heard of a lot of people now say this one is just an average read. I tried to read one of the author's other books and that was an instant DNF. I'll probably skip this one but at least you got a teensy bit of enjoyment out of it :)
