Title: In Your Dreams
Author: Amy Martin
Published: August 16th 2012
Purchase : Amazon | Smashwords | B&N
Synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old Zara “Zip” McKee lives for three things: basketball, books, and bailing out of tiny Titusville, Illinois, where the junior high and high school are in the same building and everyone’s known everyone else since birth. But when Kieran Lanier moves to town and passes out on her desk on his first day at school, Zip’s life gets complicated in a way she never dreamed.
Kieran has narcolepsy, and although he sometimes struggles to stay awake, he has no trouble capturing Zip’s heart and trusting her with his most guarded secret–he sees bits and pieces of the future in his dreams.
But just when Zip thinks that maybe she can handle having a boyfriend who sees things before they happen, her budding relationship with Kieran gets a jolt when Kieran’s parents reveal that his sleeping disorder is not what it seems and may be putting them in harm’s way. And when Zip begins to have unsettling dreams, she must decide if she can live with knowing the future in advance when she’s afraid of what might happen.

Interview with Amy!
Hi Amy, welcome to Say It with Books!
Narcolepsy, that's a never seen before approach in YA-Was there something in particular that inspired you to address this issue?
I knew I wanted to address dreams as part of the books, and waking dreams can be a symptom of narcolepsy. I also wanted to give Kieran and Zip a challenge that isn't normally seen in YA--they're struggling with all of the usual relationship drama, but Kieran's condition adds a twist. I've also had family members who suffer from dementia and related memory issues, so I'm just fascinated in general with how the brain works (or doesn't).
How do you react to a bad review of one of your books?
I accept the criticism, eat some chocolate, and move on. If I see the same types of negative comments popping up in reviews, that's a clue to me that I need to work on something in my writing. So, in that sense, there's really no such thing as a bad review.
What book/s will you never get sick of reading no matter how many times you read it?
What new author has grasped your interest?
I read Jade Varden's Deck of Lies series in one day. Once I started reading, I just couldn't stop because I had to know how the whole story ended. I also liked Jill Baguchinsky's debut, Spookygirl: Paranormal Investigator. That's a great mystery/paranormal book for younger YA readers.
Once the In Your Dreams Trilogy is done, what would be your next project?
Well, it's possible the In Your Dreams trilogy might stretch into a fourth book. I'm writing the third one right now, and we'll see if I can get everything in this one. I'm also working on a mature YA/NA family drama--if In Your Dreams goes to a fourth book, I might put that one out between the third and fourth books. I'd like to get these two/possibly three books out by the end of the year, which might kill me!

Motto in Life

The things that drive you crazy
Bad drivers, misuse of 's (people using 's to make words plural), mean people, lame excuses, people who abuse animals...I could do this all day.
Weirdest food combination that you have eaten
Hot chocolate poured over Frosted Flakes. It seemed weird at the time, but it's really good!
Favourite Mythical Creature
I don't know if he counts as a "mythical creature," but I'm going with Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb. Perry rocks!
Favorite song right now
"Sea of Love" by The National
Thanks for stopping by Amy! :)
About the Author
Amy Martin wrote and illustrated her first book at the age of ten and gave it to her fourth grade teacher, who hopefully lost it in her house somewhere and didn't share it with anyone else.
The first novel she published as a grown-up, In Your Dreams, was a 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semi-finalist in Young Adult Fiction. The second book in the In Your Dreams series, As You Wake, was released in April 2013.
Amy currently lives in Lexington, KY with her husband and a ferocious attack tabby named Cleo. When not writing or reading, she can usually be found watching sports, drinking coffee, or indulging her crippling Twitter habit (and, sometimes, doing all three at once).
A huge thank you goes out to Amy Martin for sponsoring this giveaway! We are glad to have you at Say It With Books today! :)
The book looks very interesting. I've always been fascinated by dreams so I look forward to reading this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat interview! :D I just finished In Your Dreams and I enjoyed it. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it,Ana! :)
DeleteMisused apostrophes drive me crazy, too! But I'm afraid my vexations with grammar and writing don't end there :) Thanks for the lovely interview!
ReplyDeleteHaven't read this book yet. It sounds like a good book
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot of good about this book so far. Looking forward to picking it up sometime in the near future. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso--great answer for how she handles the negative reviews. They're never really "negative" or bad, and I completely agree. In the end, they can help an author learn (if they choose to read them/can handle to read them in a professional manner without reacting, etc.).
Great interview! :)

Hi Everyone!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments, and good luck in the giveaway!
Amy Martin
Love the narcolepsy angle, sounds very original. I also love Amy's attitude to negative reviews.
ReplyDeleteYes! Totally can't wait to read this! Adding it to my TBR list... Love that cover, too ; ) I always wonder how much power they have over the direction of the design of their book cover. My brother just got into designing book covers and would like to know what he should expect! Thanks for sharing with us and Thanks for the giveaway!

Hi Meghan,
ReplyDeleteAs a self-published author, I had complete control over my book cover design. I hired a designer and gave her some ideas of what I was looking for in a cover, and she emailed me designs and we went back and forth over email (I'd make suggestions and she'd tweak things until we had a design I thought would work). My understanding is that with books that are published by big publishing houses, the publisher makes the decisions about the book covers with some input from the writer, and the designer then designs the cover.
Your brother might want to go on Goodreads and search for forums in which people are looking for book cover designers. I think there may also be some groups there in which designers can network with each other.
Good luck to him, and I hope you enjoy In Your Dreams!
