She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. I spend most of my life running away from germs. And dirt. And people. And I’m just about doing OK and then my stepmother packs me off to some kind of hospital to live with a load of strangers. It’s stuck in the middle of nowhere. Great. There’s Alice who’s anorexic. Caro who cuts herself. Silent Sol who has the cutest smile. And then there’s me.

Gosh, I haven't read The Handmaid's Tale in so long. I'd love to read it again and compare it to some of the current YA dystopian stuff.

Zelah Green sounds really interesting! It's definitely one I would probably pick up. I mean really, the hospital sounds like it's full of opportunity for drama and portrayal of tough issues.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of The Handmaid's Tale, but for some reason knowing it's by Margaret Atwood intimidates me. I don't know why! It's something like because I know the name without having read any books it must be popular or a classic and ahhh... Intimidated.
The second one about the girl who is a germaphobe sounds interesting. My sister had major issues with that for a while. She's not as bad now, but it was a real fear and anxiety. Great choices, Nuzaifa. :)
ReplyDeleteI know where Zelah Green comes from ;) Now the second book is on my TBR though I wouldn't NEED it as I promise it didn't end on a cliffhanger (: Glad people are interested- I want to put up my review right now, but I haven't typed it. Oops!
